CDP 2023 Climate Change scoring methodology
Introduction
The scoring methodology is a means to assess a company’s progress towards environmental stewardship as communicated through their CDP response. Application of the methodology results in a score, which assesses the level of detail and comprehensiveness of the content, as well as the company's awareness of climate change issues, management methods and progress towards action taken on climate change as reported in the response.
This methodology outlines the number of points available for each question.
Essential reading
This methodology should be used in conjunction with the CDP climate change questionnaire reporting guidance 2023, and the 2023 CDP scoring introduction document. It is strongly recommended that you familiarize yourself with the contents of both the Scoring introduction and the guidance before using the scoring methodology. The Scoring Introduction document provides an overview of CDP scoring, including details of thresholds and scoring eligibility, and contains information essential for the understanding and correct use of this scoring methodology
Leadership and A-list criteria
Several questions are scored for Leadership (please see Question level scoring criteria for further details) and a minimum threshold of points must be met to achieve the Leadership band.
In order to achieve A List status companies must ensure several items are included within their response, and meet several criteria:
- A minimum threshold score of Leadership points must be achieved, as outlined in the Scoring introduction;
- The verification of Scope 1, 2 and Scope 3 emissions (reported in C10.1a, C10.1b and C10.1c respectively) is mandatory; in addition, verification needs to cover at least 100% of total Scope 1 and 2 emissions with no significant relevant exclusions (reported in C6.4); and at least 70% of a minimum of one Scope 3 emissions category;
- Gross Scope 1 and Scope 2 emission figures need to also be reported (in C6.1 and 6.3 respectively);
- Report a transition plan that has the following components;
- Is 1.5oC aligned (C3.1)
- Publicly available (C3.1)
- With board level oversight and management responsibility (C1.1b, C1.2)
- A feedback mechanism in place or plans to implement a mechanism within the next two years (C3.1)
- Indicate engagement with suppliers (C12.1) [not applicable for companies scored on the Financial Services methodology]
- Report a near-term emissions target that has been validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative or meets the following criteria (C4.1a, C4.1b):
- Company-wide coverage
- Coverage of 95% of Scope 1 and 2 base year emissions
- A target year that is within 5-10 years of the year the target was set
- Submission of a public response
In addition, companies must pass a number of checks, full details of which can be found in the Scoring Introduction.
Please note that companies responding to the Minimum version questionnaire can achieve a maximum final score of A-.
Primary sector scoring
Companies will only be scored on their primary questionnaire sector. This means that if more than one set of sector questions applies to your company, not all questions will be scored. Sector specific questions will be labelled to indicate which sector(s) they apply to. However, we encourage you to respond to all questions that apply to your company.
The sector-based approach allows CDP to make more meaningful assessments of companies' responses, incorporating each sector's characteristics and nuances, resulting in a score that reflects the company's progress in environmental stewardship and enabling better benchmarking against other companies.
Cross checks
In cross-check criteria within or between questions, unless another limit is explicitly stated, a variance limit of 5% will be used when comparing figures.
Status of this methodology
This methodology is intended to provide guidance to companies on how their response will be scored. In common with other scoring processes of this type, we expect to make future adjustments in light of the application of the methodology to the responses received.
“CDP reserves the right to remove, amend or alter scoring criteria as displayed in the scoring methodology at any time during the disclosure cycle, without notice or notification. Such changes will only be made in exceptional circumstances when necessary to ensure that the methodology remains fair, impartial and effective for the purpose of assessing progress towards environmental stewardship.”

Disclosure scoring criteria
Points will be awarded per completed cell displayed (excluding both columns ‘Total emissions in target year covered by target in all selected Scopes (metric tons CO2e) [auto-calculated]’ AND ‘% of target achieved relative to base year [auto-calculated]’) in proportion to the number of rows disclosed. Partially completed rows will not receive full points
A maximum of 14 points is available for this question
Awareness scoring criteria
Best row(s) scored
The following conditions must be met to be eligible for Awareness points:
At least 8 Disclosure points awarded AND

(SC1.3) What are the challenges in allocating emissions to different customers, and what would help you to overcome these challenges?
Response options
Please complete the following table. You are able to add rows by using the “Add Row” button at the bottom of the table.
Allocation challenges
|
Please explain what would help you overcome these challenges
|
Select from:
- Diversity of product lines makes accurately accounting for each product/product line cost ineffective
- Customer base is too large and diverse to accurately track emissions to the customer level
- Managing the different emission factors of diverse and numerous geographies makes calculating total footprint difficult
- Doing so would require we disclose business sensitive/proprietary information
- We face no challenges
- Other, please specify
